A visit in Kota Tua

Hello readers, it's me Bevan Raiditia Moestafa

How's your day? I hope it's good because we all have good days unconsciously. Last week I was at Museum Kota Tua with my classmates and my EGD lecturer, Ms. Wirania Swasty. We gathered up in the lobby of FIK Sebatik building and go there using minibus.

The buildings there are so historical and old like the 1st president Indonesia, Sukarno, is still alive! The Monument there is still being displayed, and i took a picture of a cannon in front of Jakarta Museum History because I got interested ^_^

After roaming around Jakarta History Museum we're going to Indonesia Bank Museum together, gladly. In Indonesia Bank Museum all the history of Indonesia economy and banking is there, and they have all the money around the world! They even have a half Rupiah there, check it out!

After touring Indonesia Bank Museum we decided to go back home by dropping us at the lobby of FIK Sebatik building first. But before that we had a transit at rest area No.33 (If I'm not wrong) and we've been gifted a food by Rachmaghita's mom, thanks Ghita and your mom!

PLACEMAKING, THE INTERPRETIVE OR SIGNAGE/WAYFINDING

One of the thing that I noticed at Museum Kota Tua, Jakarta is the signage and wayfinding are many and created to guide people from one place to another. If you don't know the word that I've talked about:
  1. Placemaking is a multi-faceted approach to the planning, design and management of public spaces.
  2. Signage is the design or use of signs and symbols to communicate a message to a specific group, usually for the purpose of marketing or a kind of advocacy. A signage also means signs collectively or being considered as a group.
  3. Wayfinding refers to information systems that guide people through a physical environment and enhance their understanding and experience of the space.
  4. Pictograms are symbols that convey a meaning through the appearance of a graphic device resembling / imitating the physical state of the actual object to communicate information through pictures without words.
And.. there you go, it's simple as long as you want to know and learn about it. Basically, it is an object that have been known and from our surroundings since we're born, and we're understanding the signage or wayfinding around us to go somewhere else or to know what to do.

I will identify the gap between the theory what i learned in class and what actually it is with some photos of Environmental Graphic Design i took in Kota Tua, Jakarta.

Identification Signage

Theory: Identify specific destinations or places in an environment.  Identification signs indicate that "you have arrived" at your destination.

Reality: It is real from what i've learned in college, any buildings you see by your own eyes with the name of a shop it means you're near or already arrived at that shop.

Directional Signage

Theory: Signs are created to direct people to various goals in a particular environment.  Directional signage is often called Wayfinding.  Unlike identification signs, directional signage cannot stand alone.  Directional signage is a sign system that directs someone who is placed at several important decision points.

Reality: It is true, the directional signage are not one and it gives you two or more directions and the name of the place. This far what differentiates the signage are also the graphical design.

Prohibition/Regulation Signage

Theory: This sign regulates community behavior or prohibits certain activities in an environment.  For example "no noise" in the library, "no smoking" in hospitals and airplanes, "Turn off the camera lights" in museums and movie theaters, and so on.

Reality: As you can see, it is as same as the theory said. This one prohibit you from stepping to the grass comes with english translation for international language understanding in the bottom of the prohibition pictogtam.

Interpretive Signage

Theory: helps people find out about an environment, or places in it, by providing information about its history, geography, population, artifacts, and much more.

Reality: It's true, it can be done by using a graphical map and legends in the side of it just like in the picture above.
